The pre-selector (1) for an automatic vehicle gear comprises an operating element (3.1-3.n) for each driving condition of idling, forward drive and reverse drive. The operating element can adopt a first position of 'non-operation' , and a second position of 'operation'. The device for (4) accepting the functional position of forward and or reverse drive comprises a first detection de (5.1-5.n) for each of the operating elements. The device incorporates a second detection device (10) common to all operating elements and containing the means of generating a signal for evaluating the operating condition.
