PURPOSE: A driving method for a flat panel display device is provided, which suppresses voltage variation of a signal line. CONSTITUTION: A driving method is used for a flat-panel display device which includes a plurality of signal lines(S1-S3), a plurality of gate lines(G1-Gm) substantially perpendicular to the signal lines, a plurality of switching elements(SWi) provided near intersections of the signal lines and the gate lines, a plurality of pixel electrodes connected via the switching elements, and a counter electrode opposed to the pixel electrodes. A display signal is sequentially supplied to the signal lines and a potential of the counter electrode is inverted with respect to a reference potential for every predetermined number of horizontal and vertical scanning periods or vertical scanning periods so as to perform a display operation. The driving method comprises fixing all the signal lines to a predetermined potential and inverting the potential of the counter electrode during a horizontal or vertical blanking period subsequent to a horizontal or vertical display period.
