Ground support for electrically powered street furniture

The ground support, for use with traffic bollards, street lights, traffic lights, speed cameras etc., includes a base unit 5 to which a body of an item of street furniture is adapted to be connected, a housing 15 received in the ground for receiving an electrical cut-out adapted to be connected to an electrical supply cable with the base unit being adapted to co-operate with the housing to define a sealed enclosure for the electrical cut-out and with the base being removably connected to the housing. The ground support preferably includes one or more ground-engaging members 7 that are adapted to be connected to the base unit independently of the sealed enclosure. The ground-engaging members may act as fastening means attaching the base unit to the housing at a position outside of the sealed enclosure and the housing may have a collar 26 to which the base unit is connected via the ground-engaging members. The base unit is preferably connected by four equidistant fastening means so that the housing may be aligned to the nearest 90 degrees by suitable orientation of the housing on the fastening means. The base unit may contain an electrical light fitting and the base unit preferably comprises two parts with a first part 20 being adapted to be connected to the housing and to seal around the periphery of the housing while the second part 19 completes the sealing of the enclosure, with the two parts being movable relative to one another. The second part is preferably transparent and may contain a lense 17, with the second part being hinged to the first part. The base unit may have at least one upstand to which the body of an item of street furniture may be attached and the base unit and housing may be provided with an interlocking member at their interface so that the enclosure is sealed and an o-ring 36 may also be incorporated to further improve the seal. The ground support may also include a duct unit 3 for insertion into the ground, the duct unit having one or more apertures 11 through which, in use, an electrical supply cable may be inserted into the duct unit, wherein the housing is attached to the duct unit by fastening means located outside the sealed enclosure. Also disclosed is a method of installing a ground support and a method of replacing a base unit of a ground support.
