PURPOSE:To accelerate the growth of a coated layer and to form a carbide layer having a sound surface on a material to be treated by treating the material in a molten neutral salt bath contg. oxide of a Va group element, a IVa group element, and oxide of a Ia or IIa group element. CONSTITUTION:Mixed salt consisting of 5-30mol% borate and the blance neutral salt is mixed with oxide of a Va group element such as V2O5, a IVa group element or a substance contg. the element such as Fe-Ti, and oxide of a IIa or Ia group element such as BaO, and the mixture is melted by heating. A material to be treated is immersed is the molten salt bath, held under prescribed conditions, and subjected to oil quenching or other treatment. By this method a coated layer of carbide of the Va group element alone is formed uniformly. |
