PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display using an OCB cell, which is capable of speedy transfer without forcing a driver to bear excessive loads and can display satisfactory video. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal display element which has source lines supplied with pixel data, a source driver driving the source lines, gate lines supplied with scanning signals, a gate driver driving the gate lines, transistors arranged in a matrix form corresponding to intersections of the source lines and gate lines, and a structure wherein one electrode of a liquid crystal cell is arranged on the drain side of each transistor and the other electrode of the liquid crystal cell is wired to a counter electrode. When a 1st potential is applied as the potential of the counter electrode in a video display period and a 2nd potential different from the 1st potential is applied, a specific potential different from a video signal is applied as a source potential to have an effective voltage applied to the liquid crystal cell higher than that, when video is displayed.
