A helmet has an outer shell 1, and a lining 3 covering the inner surface 5 of the outer shell. The lining has an edge surface 8 extending between the inner surface 6 and outer surface 4 of the lining adjacent the edge of the shell. A strap 9 secured to the outer shell and extending between the outer shell and the lining has means for releasably attaching a portion immediately adjacent the lining to the edge surface 8 of the lining. This enables the strap adjacent the shell edge to be pulled towards the head of the wearer, thus reducing any hooking hazard formed by the strap. The releasable means most preferably comprises a hook and loop fastening.
