PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nontoxic ultraviolet absorber having excellent ultraviolet absorption and transparency and free from the problem of poor hydration resistance of zinc oxide-based solid solution. SOLUTION: The ultraviolet absorber contains a zinc oxide-based solid solution expressed by formula (Zn)1-xM3+x-δO (M3+ is a trivalent metal such as Al, Fe, Ce and Ti; (x) is a number satisfying 0<x<0.5; andδis cationic lattice defect), having a hexagonal plate form, an average secondary particle diameter of 0.1-1.5μm and a BET specific surface area of 5-20 m2/g. The invention further relates to an antisuntan cosmetic and a UV-resistant resin composition containing the ultraviolet absorber.
