PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gear type transmission for an off-road traveling vehicle which achieves miniaturization of dimensions in a transmission shaft axis direction and in a perpendicular direction to the shaft axis direction, and improves assemblability. SOLUTION: A transmission case 11 integrally formed with a crank case 10 of an engine is provided with a speed change input shaft 62, a speed change output shaft 63 and a speed change intermediate shaft which are in parallel with a crank shaft 36. A dog clutch mechanism choosing two stages for forward, neutral and reverse by the movement of a single shift sleeve 70 is arranged in the speed change input shaft 62. The intermediate shaft is equipped with a counter shaft 64 provided with an intermediate gears 73 and 74 for forward meshing with respective gears 67 and 68 for forward of the speed change input shaft 62, and with an idle shaft 65 for reverse provided with an idle gears 77 for reverse meshing with the gear 69 for reverse of the speed change input shaft 62. The counter shaft 64 is placed on the closer side to the crank shaft vertically between the speed change input and output shafts 62 and 63. The idle shaft 65 is placed on the far side to the crank shaft.
