PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal material that is well compatible with a liquid crystal compound or composition and has an effect to reduceΔn, a lowΔn nematic liquid crystal composition containing the above liquid crystal material, and a liquid crystal display element made of the above liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal material is a compound having an exomethylene group shown by general formula I (wherein, R is hydrogen or the like; A, B and C are each a single bond or the like; L, M and N are each a 1,4 phenylene group (wherein, one, two or three hydrogen atoms may be substituted by fluorine atoms), a 1,4 cyclohexylene group or the like; X is hydrogen, a cyano group or the like).
