PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a general unit for a programmable controller to which a special function can be added and in which the cost reduction is attained. SOLUTION: This unit is equipped with an external connector 1 to which external equipment such as equipment to be controlled is connected, a connection connector 2 to which a CPU unit executing a sequence program is connected, a gate array 8 which has incorporated higher a plurality of special functions being enhanced by supporting a CPU unit connected through the connection connector 2 and sends and receives signals to and from the external equipment connected through the external connector 1, and an extension connector 9 to which an extension substrate for further adding a special function by extending the special functions incorporated in the gate array 8 is connected. The extension substrate is equipped with an extension-side connector 14 which is connected to the extension connector 9, a programmable logic device 13, and a ROM 15 stored with a program for actualizing the special function added to the programmable logic device 13.
