The invention concerns a method which consists in carrying out, in a first reactor (1), partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon fuel, so as to obtain a gas stream rich in hydrogen, in eliminating in a second reactor (2) the carbon monoxide contained in the primary gas mixture produced in said first reactor by means of a shift reaction between said carbon monoxide and water vapour, and in separating the hydrogen present in the secondary mixture contained in the second reactor (2) by means of a membrane (9). Said method enables to produce very pure hydrogen for use in low-temperature fuel cells.
