PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, an image reading method and an image forming device, which can efficiently read an original and have remarkably high productivity when the reading original is a simple-sided or double-sided original, when the reading original is a color original, when a color original is mixed with a monochrome original and when originals of different sizes are loaded together. SOLUTION: This image reader is provided with a first reading part 11 for reading an original image while feeding a read image by feeding mechanisms 21 to 25 and arranged so as to read one face S1 of an original S, and a second reading part 12 arranged on the downstream side of the first reading part so as to read a face being the same as that read by the first reading part. In either case of a single-sided original or a double-sided original, whether an image is color or monochrome is decided by using an image read by the first reading part, and the reading speed of the second reading part is switched.
