PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an electromagnetic conversion characteristic compatible with traveling durability at high levels in the magnetic recording medium of a metal-magnetic thin film type. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with a nonmagnetic support 1, a magnetic layer 2 made of a metal-magnetic thin film, and formed on the nonmagnetic support 1, and a texture layer 3 having fine recessed and projected parts formed on the magnetic layer 2. In this case, when a sum total of a sectional area in parallel to the surface of the magnetic layer 2 of the projected part 3a of the texture layer 3 is calculated, the height of a surface k2 from a surface k1 is set to 7-25 nm, wherein the surface k1, is such that a sum total of a sectional area in parallel to the surface of the magnetic layer 2 becomes 50% of a total area of the forming surface of the texture layer 3 and, the surface k2 is such that a sum total of a sectional area in parallel to the surface of the magnetic layer 2 becomes 0.5% of the total area of the forming surface of the texture layer 3.
