The method involves first occupying temporary network connections (PV1,PV2) between local switching units and a central hub (HUB) of the network (ATM), whereby useful data are passed over the temporary connections, then making a direct useful connection (ANV) between the local switching units and passing data between the users (TNA,TNB) over the direct connection and releasing the temporary useful connections. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for establishing and terminating communications connections.
