A computer system having an authenticating system for checking whether an optical system is in unauthorized use. In the computer system, computers to which an optical disk can be loaded are connectable to an authorizing server through a network. Each computer has a unique device ID, and each optical ha s a unique disk ID. The server has a user database in which the device ID of a computer is stored when the computer is used and the disk ID of an optical disk is stored when the optical disk is used. In the database, data on sets of disk IDs and device IDs is stored. When an optical disk is used for the seco nd or later time, disk ID data and device ID data are transmitted to an authenticating server through the network from the computer and the use of t he optical disk is authorized.
