The invention relates to a multiplex transmission device that compresses, multiplexes and transmits a signal, such as a voice signal, a facsimile signal and a speech data signal. The signaling signals corresponding to various types of signaling systems are detected, and the operation of an echo canceler during signaling is controlled. The control of the echo canceller allows normal transmission of signaling signals, and thus the communication between multiplex transmission devices is established, and signal transmission is allowed after signaling.
