The wooden mosaic surface with a changing grain pattern for the ends on the front and reverse sides is made from slices (14) of equal width cut from an axially profiled strip of timber (10). Each slice has a uniform shape (12) so as to interlock on all sides. The profiling is produced by an axial lengthwise milling machine.
