Silicon carbide, which has been produced by chemical gas-phase deposition and doped with amorphous carbon, boron or aluminium in minimum quantities by weight of 0.01%, is used as a durable, black, reflective surface layer on decorative objects or jewellery base objects of sintered metal. In order to provide this layer with high gloss, it is subsequently polished. In addition, the black surface layer has a hardness of 5000 HV0.05, very good corrosion resistance and very good wear resistance. Owing to the combination of the silicon carbide surface layer with a high-gloss polished titanium nitride surface layer, beautiful decorative effects are achieved.
