The invention relates to a method for the treatment of active sludges, which produces a dry sludge free of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms and enriched with nitrogen. Said dry sludge can be used as fertilizer and contains the following raw materials: elementary sulfur, formaldehyde, ammonia, urea, chlorine and sulfuric acid. The method involves the following steps: feeding the active sludge to a pre-dryer in which a gas stream containing sulfur trioxide produced by the combustion and catalytic oxidation of sulfur with air is fed and completely drying the sludge by feeding it to an ammonifier.
