Staphylocidin, an antibiotic that selectively inhibits staphylococci, was prepd. by fermn. with Rothia dentocariosa. Thus, R. dentocariosa ATCC 31918 was grown in a brain heart infusion broth at 35≦̸C for 65hr with aeration and agitation. The cells were harvested by centrifugation and lysed by heating in trichloroacetic acid. The pellet was recovered by centrifugation and suspended in a trypsin soln. at 37≦̸C for 2hr to give peptidoglycan having excellent antibacterial activity. Staphylocidin was a peptidoglycan with an imcompletely detd. structure.
