PURPOSE:To raise the probability of correct answer by obtaining a primary answer when an inputted character string is divided into words and substituting the primary answer with local preferable answers. CONSTITUTION:A word dividing processor is provided with a character string input device 4, a dictionary storage device 3, a processor 1 which refers to a dictionary stored in the dictionary storage device 3 to divide a text into words, and an output device of the inputted character string and a processed character string. The processor 1 stores local answer selecting rules, which express local divided patterns of the inputted character string with combinations of properties of words and determine the precedence between contending local divided patterns, in an accessable storage area, and the primary answer is obtained when the inputted character string is divided into words, and the primary answer is substituted with local preferable answers selected based on the local answer selecting rules stored in the storage area.
