The invention relates to a display and operating device (A) that comprises a touch-sensitive display unit (B) for outputting display objects (AZ, K) and a processing unit (G). Said processing unit has first means for processing display data of a first and a second display object which simulates an on-screen keyboard (K) with keyboard elements (T), second means that superimpose the first and second display data in such a manner that the on-screen keyboard and the first display object appear transparent on the touch-sensitive display unit, third means for detecting an input position (P) on the touch-sensitive display unit, and fourth means for associating the detected input position with a keyboard element and for initiating an action associated with said keyboard element. The inventive device is advantageous in that it makes the entire surface of the touch-sensitive display unit available for the user to input data by means of the transparent on-screen keyboard without substantial limitations to the visibility of the first display data.
