PURPOSE:To improve a reproduction characteristic by annealing a PC substrate at <=130 deg.C prior to film formation in the case of forming the film of a magneto- optical recording medium contg. a recording layer consisting of a vertically magnetized film on the PC substrate. CONSTITUTION:The PC (polycarbonate) substrate 1 is annealed at <=130<= prior to the film formation in the case of forming the film of the photomagnetic recording medium 3 contg. the recording layer consisting of the vertically magnetized film on the PC substrate 1. The double refractions of the injection- molded PC substrate are caused by the frozen orientation of a phenyl group which has a distribution in the depth, radial and circumferential directions of the substrate. The frozen orientation of the phenyl group can be relieved by annealing, by which the distribution of the double refractions is decreased. The reproduction C/N characteristic of the magneto-optical recording medium is thus improved.
