PURPOSE:To evaluate a magnetic head to be measured correctly by measuring only an output reproduced by the magnetic head to be measured from a test signal recorded in advance by a helical scan type magnetic recorder. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic head 1 to be measured is in contact with a magnetic tape 3 wound on a rotary drum 2 to reproduce a test signal recorded in advance on the tape 3. Then a reproducing signal is fed to an oscilloscope 24 via a reproduction signal amplifier circuit 23. Then the reproducing signal is observed on the oscilloscope 24 to adjust an X stage 11, a Y stage 12, a Z stage 13 and a gonio stage 14 in a way that the reproducing signal is maximized thereby adjusting the contact. The reproducing output at a point of time when the contact adjustment is finished is measured to conduct the test of the head 1 to be measured. Thus, the magnetic head to be measured is evaluated correctly.
