PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable emergency stop device for an elevator that can set the position of a wedge to a specified value without replacement of a safety link. SOLUTION: The emergency stop device transmits a movement of a rope lever displaceable in dependence on a movement of a governor rope to push-up levers 16 via a link 9 of the safety link, so that the push-up levers 16 directly push up bottom surfaces of the wedges 7, which in turn hold a guide rail 4 in between to provide braking. A portion of the push-up lever 16 abutting the wedge 7 comprises an eccentric cam 20, whose rotational adjustment sets the position of the wedge 7 to a specified value.
