The use of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and peptide activating hypofissiary adenylate cyclase (PACAP) is described in the treatment of endotoxic shock in mammals. These substances inhibit the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin 6 (IL-6).
