<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the reliability of a seatbelt force limiter while reducing its costs. SOLUTION: The belt force limiter limits a belt force via the torsion of a torsion bar. The belt force limiter has not only the torsion bar but also a flange and a reel for winding and unwinding a belt. Further, a shear pin or a deforming pin is provided for locking the flange and the reel integrally with each other to prevent or obstruct relative rotation between the flange and the reel until a tensile force acting on the belt exceeds a preset level, either instantaneously or for a predetermined period of time. Thus, the limiting of the force is delayed or stepped. Further, a method of reducing the danger of vehicle occupants being injured by a restraint system increases the belt force to a certain large force level, and then reduces the belt force to that before the limiting of the belt force has started.</p> |
