The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of compounds of the general formula I wherein R1 is alkyl; R2, R3, R4 R5 and R6 are, independently, hydrogen, alkyl or alkenyl; X is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; and the dotted bond is an optional bond; to novel light screening compositions containing certain of the compounds of formula I; and to certain novel compounds of the formula I and other novel 2-substituted phenylbenzotriazole compounds.
