PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for detecting the damage of the filter cloth of a bag filter capable of achieving cost reduction. SOLUTION: A soot measuring sensor 8 is arranged to a gas gathering exhaust flow channel 7 for gathering and exhausting gases passed through respective filter chambers A-G and, when the measured value of the soot measuring sensor 8 reaches the predetermined damage level of the filter cloths, the filter cloths 5 are judged to be damaged to successively perform the on-off operation to the filter chambers for closing the dampers 3 and 4 of one or at most [N-(number of filter chambers)-1] filter chambers and opening them after the elapse of a predetermined time, and the damaged place of each filter cloth 5 is specified on the basis of the measured value during a period when the dampers 3 and 4 of each filter chamber are closed. By this constitution, the detection of the damage of the filter cloths 5 and the identification of the damaged filter cloth are performed only by using one soot measuring sensor 8 without separately using piping or a sensor for identifying the damaged filter cloth.
