PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a balance stitch device attached to a sewing machine to enable two kinds of balance stitches, smocking and flat sewing. SOLUTION: The balance stitch machine has a lever 5 with a replaceable smocking spreader and a replaceable spreader 18 for flat sewing with balance stitches. A second lever is attached to the lever 5 and an attachment for the flat sewing with balance stitches is detachably attached to one side of a frame 1. A slide rod 24 converting the oscillating movement of the second lever into sliding movement is attached to a slide guide part 21 provided on the attachment, and a thread guiding member 22 for the flat sewing with balance stitches is attached to the outer end of he slide rod. By replacing the smocking spreader with the spreader for the flat sewing with balance stitches or vice versa, two kinds of balance stitches can be made: smocking and flat sewing with balance stitches.
