Carriages (4) transporting the goods to and from transfer stations are moved along tracks (11) that contain separate track sections (12,13) for the towing vehicle and carriages, the height difference between these two track sections varying over the length of the track. The height of the towing vehicle above the ground is altered by moving it backwards or forwards along the track in order to carry out loading or unloading of the goods.
