PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the degree of freedom of threshold matrix generation at the time of binarizing images. SOLUTION: A threshold matrix is generated by the repetition of the means of selecting one shape pattern from a plurality of shape pattern data with the number of dots and a random number as parameters, judging whether or not recording is possible by comparing the selected shape pattern with the coordinate shape of a threshold array already stored in a work memory by using a shape comparison means, detecting coordinates when recording is possible and newly storing a threshold value in the detected coordinates. By using the finally prepared threshold matrix, input gradation images are binarized.
