PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which can reliably form fine magnetic domains in an amorphous recording layer consisting of a rare earth transition metal material. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 100 has a recording layer 4 for perpendicular recording and a surface magnetizing layer 3. The surface recording layer is formed in contact with the recording layer to couple together. This makes the magnetic flip start field strength in the recording layer smaller than the pinning coercive force. Even if the recording layer is made of a moving magnetic wall material, the magnetic walls are prevented from moving when a magnetic field is applied to the recoding medium from the magnetic head, and fine magnetic domains are formed in the recording layer.
