PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select an appropriate color area compression method corresponding to the kind of an image to be outputted without troubling the hands of an operator. SOLUTION: At the time of receiving color image data from an image input device and converting the color image data inputted from the image input device to a form suited for output in an image output device, the original kind of the color image data is discriminated by using the color image data inputted from the image input device and an appropriate parameter corresponding to the original kind is set in a parameter setting part 33 on the basis of an original kind discrimination signal indicating the discriminated result. In a color reproduction area compression part 32, a color area compression processing is performed by using the parameter set in the parameter setting part 33.
