PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can reliably prevent production of black and white stripes or the like the system is adapted to read a moving image of the original and further prevent a blur of image with respect to as thick original so as to enhance the productivity, downsizing and the image quality. SOLUTION: The image reader of this invention is typically configured with an original feed means that feeds an original, a vertical path through which the original is carried nearly vertically, a support base on which the original is placed nearly horizontally, an original discharge means that discharges the original, and a 1st read means to read image information of the original. The 1st read means at a halt can read the image information of the original being carried through the vertical path, and can also read the image information of the original at a halt on the support base while the read means is being moved.
