PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that it is hard to determine the gap depth of the head of an auto-reverse tape transport because the accumulated errors in the distance from the head gap to the center of rotary axis is large and it is hard to precisely adjust the positioning for the head cores. SOLUTION: The core half 14 and the shield plate half 16 are positioned and secured on a holder 12 in a shield case 11. A retainer 12e is formed in one-body with the holder 12 extending to the outside of the shield case 11. Thus the gap surface 14a of the core half 14 has no accumulated error in the distance to the fixing hole 12f. And the holders 12 and 13 are positioned by their walls in the direction of the gap depth. Thus the position of the butting surface of the core halves is precisely determined against the retainer 12e, and the depth of the gaps can be correctly determined when grinding the sliding surface 11a of the shield case.
