PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high density and large capacity magnetic recording medium to be used in audio, video or various information machines, and a recording method. SOLUTION: In a magnetic recording medium consisting of a nonmagnetic base and a magnetic layer of a thin ferromagnetic metal film formed on the surface of the base, this magnetic recording medium is made suitable to a head whose gap is 0.10 to 0.25μm long to record or reproduce signals by making the magnetic layer 120 nm thick or less, the thickness ratio of the magnetic layer to the base 30 to 660 and the metal particles composing the magnetic layer 5-25 nm in diameter.
