A functional polyphenylene ether which has in the molecule at least one functional group selected among carboxyl, acid anhydride, amino, amido, imino, silyl, hydroxyl, and glycidyl groups and gives a proton NMR spectrum in which the ratio of the peak area (A) for a chemical shift of 2.95 to 3.04 ppm to the peak area (B) for 6.00 to 6.90 ppm, (A)/(B), is 0.0001 or higher. The functional polyphenylene ether has a novel structure, which has not been attained with any conventional technique. Because of this, the polymer has an excellent color tone, is reduced in the content of black foreign substances, and when blended with another kind of polymer, gives a polymer alloy with excellent mechanical properties. Thus, the functional polyphenylene ether can give products/parts useful in various industrial fields and sufficiently meeting requirements of the industry.
