The invention relates to a vehicle audio system comprising an central audio unit with which one or more further audio components are linked via an associated first data bus, and interface means for data communication between the first data bus and a second data bus of another kind on the vehicle side. The inventive system is further characterized in that one of the audio components is an audio gateway unit comprising the interface means that represents an independent component separate from the central audio unit and in which, in addition to the data bus gateway functionality, an amplifier functionality, a tuner functionality, one or more other standard uniform audio functionalities non-specific of the vehicle type and/or country and/or one or more audio functionalities are implemented so as to choose parameters specific of the vehicle type or country. At least one vehicle loudspeaker is connected to the audio gateway unit and said audio gateway unit has a control device that controls the audio gateway unit when the first data bus, the central audio unit and/or other audio components fail in an emergency mode, in which the amplifier functionality and the tuner functionality are guaranteed. The invention further relates to the use of said system in cars.
