The instrument for the measurement of a value in at least one fluid, and especially for monitoring blood sugar levels, is linked to a mobile telephone for the transmission of the readings to a remote location, for evaluation, together with speech. The mobile telephone is fitted with a global position system (GPS) module to report the position coordinates of the user to the data center. The system for reporting blood sugar level readings to a remote center, by a mobile telephone (1), has a GPS module (9) fitted to the telephone to give the position co-ordinates of the user. The current measurement readings and/or the position data and/or the preceding measurements are stored in memory with the measurement times at the mobile telephone, together with any other relevant values. The transmitted data are also stored in memory at the data center. The mobile telephone has a reminder function to trigger an optical and/or acoustic signal, to remind the user to measure the blood sugar level at regular intervals if the measurement has not been taken at the prescribed time. The mobile telephone automatically transmits an alarm signal to the data center if a measurement is missed. The mobile telephone also transmits an alarm signal automatically to the data center if the blood sugar measurement breaches an upper and/or lower threshold level. The mobile telephone has a stored identification code, which is transmitted with each data transmission. The data center automatically retrieves stored data from the mobile telephone, without any action by the user, especially the latest measurements and/or the latest position co-ordinates of the instrument, when there is an authorization. The settings at the mobile telephone can be adjusted remotely from the data center for at least one function of the blood sugar measurement and/or the GPS function and/or at least one blood sugar level threshold value. The data center can also set the reminder function and/or the calendar function and/or the monitoring function by remote control. The remote control setting adjustments can be effected only with an authorization. The mobile telephone has an emergency key, to give a link to the data center. The mobile telephone can also transmit bio-signals from an electrocardiogram (EKG), to monitor the heart functions of the user.
