A new process in which phenols can be recovered from a preparation, having phenol as a constituent, by splitting off the polymer content (e.g. polyester) at a temperature of -(70)- 200[deg]C, by reacting the preparation with ammonia and/or a primary or secondary amine under anhydrous conditions, evaporating of the excess ammonia or amine and then isolating the phenol from the reaction mixture.
