The invention relates to a steering actuator (21) for a Steer-By-Wire- steering system, wherein two electro motors (27,29) are provided. The pinions (35,37) in the electro motors act upon on a gearwheel (39) which drives, for example, a rack and pinion steering drive (11) or a steering column (3) with a steering wheel (1) secured in place thereon. When the actuator is required to generate only a low momentum, the electro motors are controlled in such a manner that they are displaced against each other and therefore no slack occurs in the gearing between the pinions and the gearwheel. When a high momentum is required, both motors work in a parallel manner so that the torque momentum thereof is added.
