2',3'-0-Isopropylidene-9-(RS)-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine of formula I is an advanced intermediate product for preparation of 9-(RS)-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine, which is used in pharmacy in the form of gel for treatment of herpes simplex. 2',3'-0-Isopropylidene-9-(RS)-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)adenine is prepared by the reaction of adenine with 2,2-dimethyl-4-chloromethyl-1,3-dioxolane in boiling dimethylformamide in the presence of sodium or potassium hydroxide.<IMAGE>
