The invention relates to a method for operating a reforming plant for providing a hydrogen-containing gas, especially during an initial phase of power generation with a fuel cell (8). The inventive method is characterized by feeding an afflux (2) to a first reforming unit (1), discharging an efflux (3) from the first reforming unit (1), at least one effluent partial flow (4) being branched off from the efflux (3) and being returned to the afflux as an affluent partial flow (5), thereby at least partially forming a circular flow (2, 3, 4, 5). The composition of the effluent partial flow (4) corresponds to the composition of the efflux (3) when it is discharged from the first reforming unit (1). The invention also relates to a reforming plant for carrying out the inventive method. The inventive method and plant is characterized by a highly efficient production of hydrogen and also by especially short times required for starting the reforming plant.
