A copying/printing apparatus is provided with an operating panel having a directional operating element thereon adapted for operation in an even number of directions greater than two, such directions being opposed in pairs, such as a star cluster of four keys. This operating element is used for setting the value of a process parameter. Each pair of opposed directions is associated with a specific sub-set of the total set of possible values of the associated parameter, which is traversed stepwise by actuating the operating element in said directions. A star cluster of four keys, for example, offers the possibility of changing the enlargement scale by one percentage point per step with the top and bottom keys during copying, and to use the left and right keys to traverse the set of values corresponding to imaging on each other of a series of standard paper formats.
