The invention relates to a method for controlling a peripheral device using a central device and also to apparatuses for carrying out the method, where the method involves using a communication bus to transfer control information in the form of a data word containing an associated address statement from the central device to the peripheral device. In the method, to change control bits in the peripheral device, the control information is used to stipulate which at least one of the control bits is set or reset and which at least one of the control bits needs to be left unchanged, the control bits being changed by means of at least one write operation.
