DOWNHOLE MOTORIZED FLOW CONTROL VALVE

A motorized downhole fluid flow control valve operable with restricted available power. The valve design combines a number of features which allow it to be opened and closed completely against pressure differentials of several thousand psi, but to be operated using a drive motor drawing only a few tens of Watts. In the partially open condition the valve may be operated as a fluid flow control device with a dynamic control range of the order of 100:1 and a smooth monotonic flow-rate versus opening characteristic while retaining the advantage of using the low-power motor. The valve has a pressure balancing mechanism which includes flow stream control port geometries to minimize damage to the valve components which would otherwise be caused by abrasion from particles carried by the fluid, or by cavitation in the flow stream. The valve includes an outlet port enabling connection to other downhole components downstream of the flow control valve.
