PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precise and simple method of inspecting a surface roughness reduced in a measuring time for a magnetic recording medium having 1.5 nm or less of average roughness. SOLUTION: In this method for inspecting an average surface roughness of the magnetic recording medium provided with the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer, a protection layer and a lubrication layer on a substrate and having 1.5 nm or less of average roughness, a head having a slider facing to the magnetic recording medium and a suspension for supporting the slider, a rotation-driving system for rotating the magnetic recording medium, a sensor for detecting a behavior of the head, and a detecting part for detecting an output of the sensor, the peripheral speed of the magnetic recording medium when the head starts to float up or a floating-up start time up to the floating-up of the recording medium is found when the head starts contact on the recording medium, and the surface roughness of the magnetic recording medium is inspected based on a relation that the floating-up starting peripheral speed or the floating-up start time gets smaller in accompaniment with the increase of the average roughness in the surface of the magnetic recording medium.
