A direct-modulation type optical transmitting apparatus has a plurality of or a single of directly-modulatable output light sources, an optical fiber, an optical combining/branching device or wavelength selecting element, an optical amplifier, an optical receiving device, and a demodulator. In the apparatus the central wavelength in the generated wavelength of an output light is set to a position displaced from the passing wavelength center of the optical combining/branching device or wavelength selecting element in such a manner that a predetermined parameter in a demodulated signal becomes optimum.
