PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a buffer device for an elevator that reduces an initial shock generated across a car falling anomalously and impacting a buffer and prevents a shock overloading an average buffer action from acting on the car. SOLUTION: The buffer 5 is erected at the bottom of a hoistway 1, and a speed detector 8 is arranged for operation by an anomalous lowering speed of the car 4. An inflatable cushion 6 is arranged on the bottom of the car 4 in an opposed relation to the buffer 5, and a controller 9 is provided to actuate the inflatable cushion 6 via the operation of the speed detector 8. If the car 4 falls anomalously at the anomalous speed, the speed detector 8 is operated before an impact on the buffer 5 to inflate the inflatable cushion 6, which in turn absorbs an initial shock of the car 4 and the buffer 5. The anomalous fall of the car 4 is thus free of the generation of a shock overloading an average buffer characteristic in a buffer process of the buffer 5.
